James (Jim) McKnight grew up in Rockledge and holds a Bachelors Degree from Troy University and a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Southern Mississippi. Professional affiliations include the Florida City and County Management Association, the ICMA (International City Management Association), and Civilian Military Relations Council.

Mr. McKnight was selected to become the City Manager of Rockledge in April of 1986 and continued to serve in that position until his retirement in December of 2016. He is the longest tenured City Manager at one city in the history of Brevard County, and among the longest serving City Managers in the State of Florida.

Mr. McKnight has been serving as the City Manager of Cocoa Beach since January 1, 2017.

He currently serves on the Executive Board of the Brevard Homeless Coalition. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Brevard County District 4 Recreation and Parks Administrative Board as well as the Board of Directors for Keep Brevard Beautiful. In 1991 he was appointed to the Management Committee for the Indian River National Estuary Program and served in that capacity for five years. He also serves as a Board Member on the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce.

In May of 2016, he was inducted into the Space Coast Sport Hall of Fame receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Later in 2016, he was also inducted into the Space Coast Public Service Hall of Fame.

He and his wife, Christine, reside in Cocoa Beach. He also has two daughters, Natalie and Nicole, and the apples of his eye, his grandchildren Ila and Calvin.
